Sandnado

Huge sand tornado that ripped through the Australian beach made hundreds of young lifesavers to run for their lives. ‘All age groups of the nippers were together playing a game right where the sandnado hit,’ Ms Rachel Elliot who had captured the sandnado said. ‘Every kid screamed and bolted. Some who were in the middle were freaked out for a while.’

Nippers from Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club abandoned the training ahead of the clubs annual Christmas celebrations, when dark storm clouds began to build over Kingscliff Beach south of Tweed Heads.

“They’d called the games off and we were watching the storm move up the coast and then all of a sudden the sand spun up and went straight for the kids,” Mr Fairweather said. “It was pretty crazy, the kids were running everywhere saying it was a mini tornado.”

“It was just a big black storm, we could feel the wind move up the coast,” Cudgen SLSC nipper club president Nigel Hughes said. “And then the vortex came right through the nippers, they turned and ran.”
