Citizenship identifies an individual’s national origin. It defines his / her rights and responsibilities to the country (nationality). Most people can have only one country of citizenship, but some countries permit dual nationality. U.S. citizens can be native-born, foreign-born or naturalized.

Naturalization is a way for a person to become a US citizen. Below is a general overview of what to expect during the naturalization process.

First step is to apply

  1. Understand the application instructions
  2. Download the naturalization application
  3. Get two passport size photographs
  4. Collect all the documents and evidence you need to complete your application
  5. Fill out your application
  6. Review your work and correct any mistakes
  7. Submit your application, two photos, documents and evidence and the required fees.
  8. Make sure to keep your address current with USCIS

Second step is to biometrics appointment

  1. Will send you an appointment notice if we need biometrics. The notice will provide you the date, time, and location of the appointment.
  2. Appear at the location at the scheduled date and time on the appointment notice.             Bring the following documents to the appointment:
    • Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card;
    • Appointment notice and
    • A second form of identification (driver’s license, passport, or state identification card). Your second form of identification must have your photograph on it.
  3. Will send your fingerprints to the FBI to conduct a background check
  4. At your appointment, will give you a study booklet to help you prepare for the English and civics tests

Naturalization Interview

  1. Study for the English test
  2. Study for the civics test
  3. Find a free naturalization information session
  4. Find an English and/or citizenship preparation class in your area
  5. Will mail you an appointment notice for your naturalization interview. You must appear at the USCIS office at the date and time shown on your appointment notice.
  6. Appear at the USCIS office at the scheduled date and time on your interview notice
  7. Bring the following documentation for your naturalization interview:
    • Your interview appointment notice;
    • Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card;
    • A state-issued identification such as a driver’s license;
    • All valid and expired passports and travel documents issued to you that document your absences from the United States since becoming a permanent resident.

  8. Take the English and civics tests
  9. We will inform you of the results
  10. If requested, submit additional information to USCIS

Once you have successfully completed your interview and your application has been approved, will schedule for the Oath of Allegiance.

  1. Receive a notice for the oath ceremony
  2. Arrive at the ceremony and check in with USCIS
  3. Will collect your Permanent Resident Card
  4. A USCIS officer will review your responses to the questionnaire on Form N-445 when you arrive at the ceremony.
  5. Take the Oath of Allegiance
  6. Receive your Certificate of Naturalization

Once you become a U.S. citizen, you can enjoy expanded rights and responsibilities.
