In a first, The Mayor of London Mr Sadiq Khan has named an Indian, Deepak Parakh as the first International Ambassador. Parakh is a businessman who would be tasked with championing London all across the world.

This International Ambassador group, formulated by Mr Sadik would comprise high level businessman and cultural figures who are both based in London and also abroad. Mayors office released a statement where Mr Sadik has stated, “As a highly respected Indian business figure, his (Parekh) experience and profile will be invaluable as we build on the excellent relations that we already have with India”

Deepak Parakh is the Chairman of HDFC, the premier Housing Development Finance Company. He is also a elite board of director for various other business conglomerates too.

Parekh said: “I am indeed honored to be the first International Ambassador with an aim to promote fair and progressive relations between India and London as the city navigates the next many decades”

Mayor’s office statement also stated details about the role of International Ambassador. It will be to “bang the drum for London, promote investment opportunities into London and amplify key Mayoral messages to international audiences”, the statement read.

This announcement was made by Mr Khan on Monday at a breakfast with senior leaders in Mumbai, India. Mr Khan on his voyage to promote London as a Business centre and tourism destination. He also aims to bring stronger ties between India and London, the capital of UK.

Parekh has been a member of City of London’s advisory Council of India that has been a guiding and inspiring force behind London’s engagement with India. Parekh was conferred the first international award for Outstanding Achievement Award by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Deepak Parekh also said: “India and the UK have intertwined histories and London has been at the pivot of the social, demographic and economic upsurge between the two democracies. I am indeed honored to be the first International Ambassador with an aim to promote fair and progressive relations between India and London as the city navigates the next many decades”.
