Following the executive order placed by the Trump administration for the future of immigration in the country, several of the British MPs have now worked tighten the existing immigration laws in the country. Implication of these new rules can make several of the key workers unwelcome in the country.

As per the reports from opposition Labour party, majority of the British cabinet ministers who initiated the weekly applause for the key workers are not working enough to back up the immigration reforms which make several of the key workers unwelcome in the country.

As per the new immigration system that has been proposed by the British government amidst the pandemic suggests that the individuals who are earning less than 25,600 pounds yearly are unskilled as per the reports stated by shadow home secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds.

This suggests that several of the nurses, doctors, shop workers, refuse collectors and even the local government staff who have come to UK from overseas might be ineligible for staying under the new proposed scheme, especially with the coronavirus hitting.

The criticism made by Thomas-Symonds came after the MPs backed the measures to repeal the European Union Freedom of movement rules with prospect to the Immigration and Society Security Co-ordination Bill.

This new legislation is a step towards the government’s new points based immigration system, which is going to be introduced in 2021. The details of the new scheme have not be set out yet.

The same is likely going to be fleshed out in the immigration rules, which is likely going to explain the future system of both the EU and non-EU nationals that have moved to UK following the Brexit transition.

Under this new scheme, it is likely that the European citizens will not have the automatic right to come to the UK to either live or work. Likewise, it also applies to the British citizens from having an automatic control on the right to live and work in the 27 member nations of EU.

The Home Secretary Priti Patel has suggested that this new reform is likely going to create a “firmer, fairer and simpler system” which is further going to help the nation in recovering from coronavirus.

“That is why we are introducing a new fast-track NHS visa to prioritise the qualified staff needed to provide high quality and compassionate professional care,” said Patel about the NHS staff.

Patel further emphasised saying that it is crucial at the moment to right the policies that affect all the NHS workers, be it the immigration health surcharge or anything else regarding that. This was one of the reason why she introduced the free automatic one year visa extension for those who have less than six months left on their visas.

The announcement sparked criticism among the masses suggesting that the individuals who risked their lives to save the British people are only getting a temporary reprieve from having to leave the country.

“It delivers on the promise we made to the British people. It ends free movement. It takes back control of our borders,” Patel further added.

This allows the government to have an immigration system that is firm and fit for the future. The point based system is also going to help support the economic recovery of the country by prioritising the jobs for the UK citizens first.

To these, Thomas-Symond further quoted saying that during such times of crisis, the government is now putting forth an immigration system that contains a sudden salary threshold. This sends a clear signal to the ones earning less that their skills are not valuable.

“It’s a Bill that will result in many thousands of EU nationals losing their rights in this country overnight and which will extend the reach of the hostile environment still further,” said Stuart McDonald, SNP immigration spokesperson.

Yvette Cooper, Labour chairwoman of the Home Affairs Committee believes that the legislation is flawed by the country was in need of one, so there is no point opposing it at this point. She said that even though it is unlikely that she will vote against the Bill but in case the Government’s approach doesn’t change, there could be opposition for that.

The proposals for the new system by the government have been in place since February. The visa that allows the doctors, nurses and health professionals from overseas to come work in the UK was passed in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
