Juli Payette, Canadian Governor general resigns amid claims that she has created a toxic environment for her staff. Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has confirmed to the media that he has received her resignation.
Julie is a former astronaut who has made her way into the liberal government in 2017.
There have been several harassment claims made by several staff members who felt they were being bullied by the former governor. Although the Governor felt that she never treated her employees in such a manner, she still resigned claiming she did not want to create a furthermore toxic environment. She is also resigning due to multiple personal health complications.
Assunta Di Lorenzo, Julie’s secretary who is also a top bureaucrat is also resigning from the office.
Julie is also the Queen’s representative in Canada. The governor general is the official head of the state in her absence. The position is usually ceremonial on a large scale. The governor has the power to give a throne speech and suspend parliament. She can also swear in the Prime minister and is commander-in-chief of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Until a new appointment, Trudeau declared that Chief Justice of Canada, Richard Wagner will act as the governor general in the interim. In due course, the Prime minister will submit recommendations for Julie Payette’s replacement to the Queen.
