Chhaya Community Development Corporation is a popular advocacy organisation for Indians, Indian-Americans and the South-Asian communities based in Queens, NYC. They have recently put out an urgent call for donations to help individuals and the smaller businesses in the locality that have been suffering because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an email appeal sent out on May 13, Chhaya CDC urged people to donate suggesting that the South-Asian communities are fighting for their lives all the while losing their livelihoods. Rent is due and the families are often going to be starving.

The South Asian and Indo-Caribbean New Yorkers are the ones the worst hit because of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

Every single day, the horrifying situations are just getting worse with the people from these communities losing their loved ones and even fighting outside the food pantry lines for hours to get their hands on something edible to eat. They are also facing a very bad situation in making rent and struggling to pay for some of the basic necessities.

The community organisation has been helping the members access some of the critical services as well as working with the government for relief from the agencies and also delivering the much needed cash during these times of crisis.

The organisation reported that with the raised money and donations, they have been able to provide with cash assistance to over 200 families. But, the numbers don’t stop there as over 100 more families have reached out to them for aid.

Through the Covid-19 relief fund that they have arranged, the organisation plans to raise over $50,000 to further distribute to the community members who are in critical situations. Every dollar that the organisation raises will go directly to the individuals in need.

The donation link for the cause is available on www.chhayacdc.org. The organisation has been able to raise around $5000 so far from 12 donors.
