While the entire world is fighting a global pandemic, a renowned Indian origin virologist, Gita Ramjee passed away because of the Covid-19 complications.

Ramjee is known across the world for some of her breakthrough works in the field of virology, especially in fighting off the HIV crisis. She was working as the Chief Scientific Officer at the Aurum Institute and passed away on Tuesday because of complications caused by the novel coronavirus.

The scientist fell extremely sick after her tour from the United Kingdom and reported the symptoms when she returned to South Africa.

One of her colleagues, Gavin Churchyard stated saying, “She dedicated many years of her life to finding HIV prevention solutions for women.” He further described Ramjee as an extreme fighter and lively person.

Churchyard further stated saying, “That will be my lasting memory of her – how she fought with everything to advance access to healthcare for women in disadvantaged communities.”

David Mabuza, who is the deputy president of the country said that Ramjee’s passing has come off as a huge blow to the entire medical fraternity and the country, in general. She will always be remembered as someone who dedicated her life to science and towards finding a astute cure for the condition of HIV.

Losing her, according to Mabuza, has made the world lose a very crucial figure against the fight towards the HIV epidemic. He further said that in honor of the fight that she had endured till her last breath, it is important for every single person to work together to flatten the curve and not make the world lose another important person.

Mabuza said that in memory of Ramjee, the world is now going to fight against the HIV infections and a possible treatment for it too.
