The immigration agency of Canada has exceeded one lakh for the second consecutive time regarding granting a study permit to the Indian students. It has been found out that Canada has approved a little more than the 4 lakh study permits out of which 1.39 lakh or around 34.5 percent have been received by the Indian students which was then followed by Chinese who had bagged 21 per cent of the new study permits, in the year 2019.

It has been recorded that Canada has granted a total of 3.55 lakh study permits in the year 2018. according to the figures that have been recently released says that an overall increase of 13.8 per cent has been observed in the year 2019 when compared to the previous year.

An analysis has been made regarding the study permits that have been given in the last three years which has shown that while the number of the Chinese students to be granted a study permit has been observed to get declined gradually and that it has been observed a steady increase in the number of study permits being granted to the Indian students.

It has been observed that the number of the Chinese students who have been granted study permits in the year 2019 is found to be less when compared to the number of Chinese students granted study permits in the previous year. The number was observed to be 84,710 in the year 2019 where as the previous year has witnessed around 85,165 Chinese students being granted study permits in Canada.

On the other hand, there has been steady increase in the number regarding the Indian students being granted of study permits. It has been observed that the study permit has been increased by 30.3 per cent to 1.39 lakh when compared to the number of the previous year which was found to be 1.07 lakh. More students of India and several other countries are being attracted to the Universities and the courses in Canada and can be attributed to several different factors such as uncertainties which are relating to the optional training programme (OPT) for the international students I the United States.

Karan Gupta who is said to be the study abroad career counsellor has said that the reason for increase in the number of study permits might be because a student studying in Canada is more likely to land a well paying job and would be able to settle down in the country.

“The country also has some world-renowned universities such as the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo and McGill university and students are keen to attend these universities,” as said by Karan Gupta.

He also added saying that as United Kingdom is now offering a two- year work permit to the student from next year, few students who have earlier considered Canada may now consider United Kingdom as an option.

Canada is said to permit the students to work as a part- time and to fund their studies and a post- graduation work permit (PGWP) is also made available for a maximum of three years basing on the course of study that is chosen by the student. The education and work experience of Canada would also help to garner higher points under the Express Entry route which would be helpful if the erstwhile student has wished in obtaining permanent residency.

KP Singh who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Management and Foreign Studies has said that, “Education is a by-product of the desire to get a livelihood. Students are seeing Canada as an easier option for migration.”
