Over 5,000 complaints have been received by the government since the year 2016 from the women who have been filing a complaint about abandonment, harassment and cheating among various others about their Non- resident Indian (NRI) spouses with Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka have been placed in the top- six list.

Most of the complaints that have been filed are said to be pertaining the issues like abandonment, harassment, cheating, domestic violence by their spouses who reside abroad, to ascertain the whereabouts of NRI spouses, request for extradition, the deportation of the spouse to India, request for maintenance, support, divorce or child custody and also a request for assistance regarding legally and financially for filing a case against the NRI spouse.

The Ministry of External Affairs has informed a parliamentary panel regarding the official records which is said to show that the majority of the complaints are said to be from the English- speaking Western countries such as the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand and the Gulf area seems to be having relatively few complaints of the similar kind of complaints.

Among the states, it has been observed that Punjab is said to have the highest number of complaints which is 763, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 501 complaints, Maharashtra with 468 complaints, Delhi with 436 complaints, Rajasthan with 371 complaints and Karnataka with 341 complaints and one each from Meghalaya and Tripura although they have been no complaints from the north- eastern states of Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.

Currently, an Integrated Nodal Agency (INA) has been set up as a single- window mechanism in order to try finding a solution to the problems of the women who have been affected.
