Thousands of Indian- Americans staged a protest near the Consulate of India in New York in order to protest against the new law that has been passed in India.

The Citizenship Amendment Act that has been passed in India gave rise to several protests across the nation and several other countries as they oppose the law stating that it would discriminate the people based on their religion.

The protest near the Consulate of India in New York has been organized by the ‘Coalition Against Genocide’ which is a group of around forty organizations that are based in the United States and Canada and also individuals who are against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The protest has coincided with the Republic Day of India.

Similar protests have been taken place in Washington D.C and 28 other major cities in America in which several Indian- Americans have participated which also included the representatives of American- Sikh, Christian and Jewish organizations and also the individuals of human rights bodies have participated.

The protest that has taken place in New York was also joined by the members of Black Lives Matter which is a powerful organization of Afro- Americans.

The protest is said to witness a number of women among the protesters carrying banners that read anti- CAA and has raised slogans against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they demanded the repeal of Citizenship Amendment Act and the revocation of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) that has also been proposed by the government of India.

The speakers have said that the new Indian regulations that have been made will erode the commitment that the country India has made regarding secularism which has been adopted in the year 1950.

Imran Pasha who is the New York chapter p-resident of the Indian American Muslim Council has said that he believes in the true aim of the amendment and that the related measure is to disenfranchise the Muslims and force them in getting converted to Hinduism. He added saying that the citizenship regulations are purely discriminatory and that it has be condemned and the citizenship regulations have to be protested.

The citizenship Amendment Act that has been passed by the government of India is seeking to provide the citizenship of India to the non- Muslim communities i.e., the communities of Hindus, Christians, Buddists, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains from the three neighboring countries namely Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan who are said to be the religious minorities in the three countries and have been facing religious persecution there and have come to India on or before 31st of December in the year 2014.
