A young Indian lawyer has won an election in the UN General Assembly for the membership to the world body’s legal experts. Aniruddha Rajput, 33, has garnered the highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific group and got elected. She is among the 34 individuals who are elected by the General Assembly as the members of the International Law Commission.
Aniruddha Rajput is an alumnus from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Rajput was a member of an expert group appointed by the Law Commission of India to study and comment upon the Model Bilateral Investment Treaty 2015 of India.
He has also authored several books, chapters, articles, conference papers on diverse legal subjects. His areas of expertise in the international laws include the Sources of International Law, International Arbitration, Law of the Sea, Use of Force, UN Law & Practice and International Trade Law (WTO Law).
Aniruddha Rajput is India’s first time candidate for the Commission, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin said.
Singapore’s Ambassador to the United Nations Burhan Gafoor has congratulated on Rajput’s election, for which Akbaruddin replied that, “We are deeply appreciative of the support extended by many, many friends of India to ensure Dr Rajput’s election by a huge margin.”
Second highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific group,148 was polled in favour of Japan’s Shinya Murase. Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud of Jordan and Huikang Huang of China polled 146 votes each. Korea’s Ki Gab Park got 136 votes, Ali bin Fetais Al-Marri of Qatar got 128 votes and Hong Thao Nguyen of Viet Nam got 120 votes.
The members are being elected from the five geographical groupings of African, Asia-Pacific, Eastern European, Latin American and Caribbean and Western European states.
