Two Indian-origin women attorneys were appointed as judges to the criminal and civil courts by the New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Archana Rao has been appointed as a judge to the Criminal Court where as Deepa Ambekar has been reappointed as a judge to the Civil Court in New York.

“These appointees will represent New Yokers proudly and work tirelessly to provide oversight of our courts,” said de Blasio. “Their work is essential in ensuring that we are creating a fairer city for all.”
Judge Rao has completed her graduation from Vassar College and has received her Juris Doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law. She has served as the Bureau Chief of the Financial Frauds Bureau with the New York County District Attorney’s Office for 17 years until recent times and was later on appointed as an Interim Civil Court Judge in January 2019.
Judge Ambekar has served with the New York City Council as a Senior Legislative Attorney and Counsel to the Committee on Public Safety and was later on appointed as as Interim Civil Court Judge in May 2018. She has also been serving in the Criminal Court.
