The residence of a non-resident Indian (NRI) was hit by burglars. The robbery has been done in Detwal village of Mullanpur Dakha and absconded with jewellery and cash worth Rs 2.2 lakh.

The first information report(FIR) has been registered by the police based on the complaint that was lodged by Biraj Singh, 75, on Friday. The NRI, Biraj Singh flew to India after knowing about the theft.

Briaj said that, he had visited India in April along with his wife and that he had been living in Canada for the past 46 years with his family. He added saying that he left to Canada leaving some gold jewellery at their residence.

“We went back to Canada on May 17 and had left some gold jewellery, £125 (approx RS 11,500), $350 (approx Rs 24,900) and RS 12,000 at our residence,” he said.

“On December 14, my driver Gurpreet Singh informed me about the theft. On coming back, I found the lock of cupboards broken and jewellery and cash missing. The total value of stolen articles is Rs 2.2 lakh,” he told the police.

The FIR has been registered under the Section 457 and 380 of IPC at the Dakha police station.

Section 457 stands for lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment and the Section 380 stands for theft in dwelling house.

According to the police, the investigations have started. “We are checking the footage of CCTV cameras and trying to get clues from people living nearby to trace the accused,”ASI Avtar Singh said.
