Indian-American becomes dean

An Indian-American Anantha Chandrakasan, which is an academician at the iconic Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is named as a dean of one of the Engineering school of the Institute.

Chandrakasan is also the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS).

According to the statement released by the MIT, Chandrakasan assumed his new role from July 1, succeeding Ian Waitz, who is now a vice-chancellor of the MIT.

He has been the head of various the largest academic department of the MIT which allowed the students to explore the entrepreneurial projects.

The President of MIT, Rafael Reif said that the appointment of Chandrakasan would prove highly beneficial in times of pressures of federal funding as well as increasing global competition from the engineering talent.

Known as an “innovative, people-centric hero” Chandrakasan, since he joined the MIT in 1994, worked on research focusing on raising the efficiency of energy circuit.

Chandrakasan, whose mother was a biochemist, moved to the US in the high school and spent a lot of time in his mother’s lap. He has secured his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

He has also been the recipient of various awards such as Semiconductor Industry Association University Researcher Award 2009, IEEE Donald O Pederson Award in Solid-State circuit 2013, Honorary Doctorate from KU Leuven in 2016 and UC Berkeley EE Distinguished Alumni Award.
